Flowers:

sepals white, 3-5, petal like; petals white, more or less equal to the number of sepals; stamens longer than the petals, 4-7 mm



Fruit:

berry is commonly shiny red but sometimes white, 5-10mm



Leaves:

all cauline leaves 2-3 times ternate, sharply toothed and lobed



Habitat:

deep soils, moist, open to shaded sites, mixed evergreen or coniferous forest



Distribution of species:

Alaska to California, both sides of the Cascades, east through Canada and northern U.S. to the Atlantic, and south in the Rocky Mountains to New Mexico


Distribution of genus:

5-6 species, temperate North America, Eurasia
