Flowers:

3 to 12 heads in an open racemiform inflorescence; dioecious, corollas on staminate plants are 3 to 4 mm, corollas on pistillate plants 3.5 to 5.5 mm

Leaves:

basal leaves are elliptic, 1.5 to 10 cm long by 1 to 5 cm wide, green on the upper surface and tomentose beneath; cauline leaves 10 to 30 mm


Plant:

perennial; upper stem densely glandular, not tomentose


Habitat:

montane forests


Distribution of species:

southwest Canada to Northern California, east to South Dakota and Wyoming
