Flowers:

flowers not closing at night; petals narrowly rhomboidal, 5 to 14 mm, pinkish-lavender to rose-purple, unlobed, claw often toothed near the base; 8 fertile stamens (unlike most Clarkia's which have 4)

alternate, simple; blade 1 to 6 cm long, elliptic to ovate; petiole 5 to 25 mm

10 to 30 cm tall; annual

forests and woodland


Distribution of species:

southern British Columbia to southern California, mostly in the East Cascades in Washington, east to Idaho, Utah and Arizona


Distribution of genus:

more or less 41 species: western North America, 1 species in South America
