Flowers:

borne in compact, generally subdichotomously branched cymes that lack a well developed main axis; inflorescence lower (shorter) than leaves; peduncles short and seldom greater than 5 cm, often reflexed in fruit; corolla bell-shaped, purple; stamens equal, exserted


Leaves:

alternate; leaflets entire or more often some of them with 1 or 2 deep incisions, not toothed along margins


Plant:

perennial


Habitat:

widespread species from lowland desert to mid elevations in conifer forest
