Flowers:

inflorescences terminal; flowers irregular, orange-yellow to orange-red (the flowers in the photo are more red than most); tube densely hairy within, 3 to 4 times as long as the lips, corolla 16 to 40 mm; stamens, style, and stigma slightly exerted


Fruit:

small, several seeded berry


Leaves:

mostly glabrous with ciliate margins; leaves closest to the inflorescence fused together around the stem


Plant:

trailing to high climbing vine. Used by the Thompson for rope and twine, and used with willow on suspension bridges across canyons and rivers.


Habitat:

forests and thickets

British Columbia to California, and Montana
