Flowers:

papilionaceous; open racemes, 6 to 40 cm; upper lip of calyx cleft less than 1/3 of length; calyx not spurred; banner glabrous on the back


Leaves:

palmately compound; glabrous on upper surface, sparsely hairy on the lower surface; leaves of main stem generally less than 8; leaflets elliptic-oblanceolate, 4 to 15 cm by 10 to 25 mm


Plant:

perennial; 20 to 150 cm tall; stems usually unbranched


Habitat:

often along streams or meadows, but into mountains on shaded or open slopes


Distribution of species:

mainly east Cascades, British Columbia to California, east to Idaho, Montana, and south


Distribution of genus:

more or less 200 species: tropical and western South America, the Mediterranean, and North America especially in the west
