Flowers:

papilionaceous; racemose; flowers mostly 10-12 mm, generally blue; banner white centered, pubescent to the upper third; calyx not spurred on the upper side at the base; keel abruptly contracted to a claw, tip rarely exposed


Leaves:

palmately compound


Plant:

perennial


Habitat:

sagebrush desert to lower mountain forest


Distribution of species:

mainly east Cascades, British Columbia to southern Oregon, to Arizona, east to the Rocky Mountains and New Mexico and south


Distribution of genus:

more or less 200 species: tropical and western South America, the Mediterranean, and North America especially in the west
