Flowers:

flowers 1 to 2 cm; corolla axillary, bilabate; corolla throat nearly closed by the palate; lateral and lower calyx teeth acute, upper tooth larger than the others; pedicel generally greater than calyx


Leaves:

opposite; 0.5 to 2 cm; palmately or subpalmately veined, the main 3 to 7 veins arising at or near the base; leaves subtending flowers fused only at their bases or not at all, ovate to cordate; base of leaves often irregularly small lobed


Plant:

perennial or annual


Habitat:

occuring in moist areas, near streams and springs


Distribution of species:

near sea level to mid elevation, California to Alaska, western Canada, in the Rocky Mountains, and northern Mexico


Distribution of genus:

more or less 100 species: western North America, Chile, eastern Asia, southern Africa, New Zealand and Australia
