Flowers:

solitary, terminal on 3 to 15 cm tall scape, white; style 2 to 4 mm, straight; 5 numerous; sepals persistent, petals deciduous


Leaves:

basal; blades ovate-elliptic to obovate, 1 to 2.5 cm, glabrous


Plant:

perennial; evergreen


Habitat:

light to deep woods, especially in moist areas or on rotting wood, lowlands to mountains


Distribution of species:

southern Alaska to California east and west of the Cascades, east to eastern Canada and Pennsylvania and in the Rocky Mountain states to New Mexico


Distribution of genus:

more or less 20 species: generally circumboreal, and in high mountains of Central America
