Flowers:

inflorescence terminal, lower parts with leafy bracts; calyx 7 to 10 mm, intercostal membranes flat or nearly so; style short, 0.5 to 2 cm; peduncles 3 to 20 mm


Leaves:

linear to broadly lanceolate, up to 7 cm long by 1 cm wide, most leaves greater than 2 mm wide


Plant:

perennial; stems erect, 15 to 50 cm tall, openly branched; generally more or less hairy or glandular, especially upwards, seldom wholly glabrous


Habitat:

widespread in sagebrush and ponderosa pine areas


Distribution of species:

east Cascades from Washington to California, and to Montana


Distribution of genus:

more or less 60 species: America, Siberia
