Flowers:

flowers in flat-topped corymbs, complete, perigynous; 5 petals, pink to red; calyx 5 lobed; 25 to 50 stamens


Leaves:

deciduous, toothed; 1 to 7 cm long


Plant:

woody perennial, 20 to 90 cm tall; nearly or quite glabrous except within the hypanthium, or leaves and inflorescence bractlets ciliate


Habitat:

mostly where moist, but onto rocky slopes, and in the mountains from 2,000 to 11,000 ft.


Distribution of species:

British Columbia to Oregon, east to Montana


Distribution of genus:

more or less 50 species: northern temperate regions
