Flowers:

inflorescence raceme-like; petals 1 to 2 cm, orange to reddish; calyx bracteolate; stigmas terminal and capitate; anthers yellow


Leaves:

crenate to lobed less than 1/2 of the way to the midvein, 5 veined; blade less than 4.5 cm, green to grey-green, margin coarsely dentate


Plant:

perennial; stem erect, 20 to 80 cm tall; stellate-pubescent, canescent


Habitat:

dry open places, desert plains to lower mountains


Distribution of species:

south central British Columbia to western Montana, California, Utah and Wyoming


Distribution of genus:

more or less 50 species: warm regions in the Americas and in southern Africa
