Flowers: corolla short-campanulate, corolla lobes less than tube; style 2 to 3 mm long, glabrous; lobes and upper throat more or less densely hairy |

Fruit: white, berry-like, 2 seeded, 6 to 15 mm |

Leaves: variable in shape from entire to lobed Plant: woody shrub, branches ascending to upright. Stems are hollow, unlike S. oreophilus which are solid. |

Habitat: streambanks, thickets, woods and open slopes; lowland to middle elevations in the mountains |

Distribution of species: Alaska to Montana and California, naturalized in the Eastern United States Distribution of genus: more or less 10 species: North America and 1 species in China
