Flowers:

solitary, erect, subtended by a whorl of 3 large leaves; peduncle 2 to 8 cm; petals white to pinkish, turning more pink with age, 1.5 to 7 cm long by 0.5 to 4.5 cm wide, equal to or greater than the sepals; sepals 1.5 to 6 cm, greenish


Leaves:

mostly acute to acuminate, sessile, not mottled; 5 to 20 cm long


Plant:

perennial; glabrous


Habitat:

streambanks to open or thick woods, often where bog-like during the spring, lowlands to middle elevations


Distribution of species:

southern British Columbia to California from the coast inland, east to Montana, Wyoming and Colorado


Distribution of genus:

30 to 40 species: North America and Asia
