Flowers:

petals yellow on both surfaces, the lower 3 purple veined within, 8 to 14 mm; peduncles only from the upper axils


Leaves:

aerial stems naked below, leaf and flower bearing only from near tip; leaf blades reniform to ovate-cordate, more or less entire to crenate or serrate, tips generally acute, blade 2 to 13 cm; stipules generally small and not leaflet-like


Plant:

perennial; 3 to 34 cm tall


Habitat:

moist woods or stream edges


Distribution of species:

southern Alaska to Sierran California on both sides of the Cascades, east to Montana, also in northeast Asia
