petals almost white to pale blue or violet, lower 3 petals violet veined at base and 8 to 17 mm, lateral 2 petals more or less bearded; sepal appendages 1 to 2 mm, ear-like


Leaves:

basal, simple; petiole 20 to 170 mm; blade 20 to 65 mm, ovate to round, crenate, base cordate, tip obtuse; glabrous; stipules reddish


Plant:

perennial; 5 to 22 cm tall


Habitat:

moist meadows, marshes, and stream banks

British Columbia to California, east to the Rocky Mountains and to Labrador, also in Europe
